Data networking customers have a variety of service options to choose from today: dedicated private lines, dial-up facilities, and public or private packet-switched networks. The transmission media can be cable, optical, fiber, microwave radio, and satellites. Satellites, until recently, haven't been used very much because of their cost. But recent advances in technology for the 14/12- Gigahertz Ku-frequency bank and small, low-cost earth stations have fanned new interest in satellites. AT&T's SKYNET(R) Service family of products includes everything--plus access to the "bird"--needed to get a satellite data network up and running.
