Small variable resistors suitable for use in communications equipment

The small rotary potentiometers in normal use, with elements composed of cured colloidal graphite, have proved unsatisfactory both electrically and mechanically. An investigation revealed that the electrical instability was due to ingress of moisture while the mechanical trouble was traced to too loose spindle bearings and poor lubricating oil. These faults have now been cleared and a standard method of production evolved.
