There has been a good deal of interest recently in the emerging discipline of software reliability engineering. This interest can be attributable to the growing amount that software reliability contributes to the overall reliability of products being built. This article describes the measurement and analysis aspects of software reliability and is intended to provide software engineers and managers a feeling of where and how software reliability measurement can be applied to their projects. It first provides some background for understanding software reliability measurement and then discusses activities associated with measuring and analyzing software reliability in the context of the software product life cycle.
