Computer software, rapidly overshadowing hardware in cost and complexity, is becoming the dominant and critical component in computer systems. A problem that frequently occurs in software design is that specifications are not met - causing irritation between the software designers and the users. Software that does not meet its specification may even lead to lawsuits between the person or organization paying for the software and the software designer. Eventually, such software must be modified, incurring both additional costs and delays in software delivery dates.
