Sol-gel deposition of Tb sup (3+):Y sub 2 SiO sub 5 cathodoluminescent layers.

Tb sup (3+) -doped yttrium orthosilicate cathodoluminescent films were deposited on fused silica and sapphire substrates using a sol-gel method. A composition close to the stoichiometric was obtained. Heating of the films produced amorphous coatings, which crystallized at 900C forming Y sub 2 SiO sub 5 crystals. Dependences of photo- and cathodoluminescence on the phase composition of the films were studied.
