SONET Framing Recognition Using Modulation Domain Analysis
01 October 2001
We have experimentally studied the SONET data traffic with pseudo-random bit sequence (2 sup (23) - 1 PRBS) as the data payload in the time domain, the spectral domain, and the modulation domain. The spectral structure of the SONET framing sequence is fundamentally different from that of the random bit sequence of the same length. Based on this observation, the SONET framing pulses are experimentally extracted by a modulation domain analyzer for an OC-48 data traffic. The histogram data show the error probability for false framing is 1.7 x 10 sup (-5). The scheme can be scaled to higher data rates for performance monitoring applications in all-optical regeneration systems.
