The normal-state and superconducting thermodynamic properties of Y Ba sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 7 superconductors with T sub c near 90 K can be explained by conventional electron-phonon interactions in the strong-coupling limit. When strong coupling is combined with relaxation of a soft lattice, new effects appear which I use to reconcile spectroscopic and kinetic measurements of energy gaps in this material.
