Atomic helium scattering has been used to systematically study strongly chemisorbed overlayers on Si(111) with the principal goal of measuring complete surface phonon dispersion curves for these reconstructed surfaces. The diversity of surface structures and surface lattice dynamics is illustrated with results for As, Cu, Ga, and B chemisorption. This is the text of an invited talk given at the OSA Topical Meeting on Microphysics of Surfaces, Beams, and Adsorbates.
