In this paper, we examine the effect of topology control on network capacity and energy efficiency. As compared to fixed transmission power, our analysis shows that the capacity improvements depend on the reliability of link layer transmissions and traffic patterns. Specifically, if link layer does not retransmit, network capacity decreases quickly with the increase of link layer packet dropping probability and average path length.
