Traffic Engineering for Local Area Networks
10 May 1988
This tutorial paper focuses on important traffic issues related to the engineering of local area networks. The first part of the paper provides a broad overview of fundamental traffic and performance issues for important LANs such as token ring, token bus, and Ethernet. We discuss the key factors which influence the traffic handling characteristics of LANs. Simple approximations and bounds on delay and throughput provide insight into the critical design tradeoffs for various LANs.
