Transmission Performance Monitoring of the AT&T FT Series G Lightguide System

Characterization of transmission performance is an important step in the development of new and improved lightguide systems. At AT&T Bell Laboratories, an experiment has been developed to monitor a DS-3 signal between two cities on the FT Series G 417 Mb/s lightguide system. Bit error rate, errored seconds, parity errors, framing errors and system status parameters are recorded each second. The implementation of the experiment, as well as some preliminary results, will be discussed in this paper.
