Trends in SONET Network Evolution (NOT KNOWN IF PUBLISHED BECAUSE AUTHOR HAS LEFT AT&T)

The SONET based networks of tomorrow will offer many advantages over the current asynchronous networks. This paper will discuss the evolution of the asynchronous networks of today to the SONET based next generation networks. Clearly, there is a tremendous embedded base of asynchronous network elements that will not be replaced overnight with SONET compatible equipment. In addition to the investment in transmission equipment, there is an enormous investment in outside plant, Operations Support systems (OSs), and training of personnel.
