Upgrade of 10Gb/s network to 40Gb/s, challenges and enabling technologies

WDM networks running at 10Gb/s channel rate are now commonly deployed and the upgrade to 40Gb/s has become a major topic of research. In this paper, the challenges and enabling technologies are described.
