The requirement for basestations that are more and more flexible and multiband capable leads to the need for multiband RF functional blocks and tunable filters. By presenting several examples like a coupler, a duplex filter and a balun it is shown that metamaterial structures can be of great advantage for frequency agile RF systems as they can be designed for multiband capability. Also electronic tuning of highly selective duplex filters becomes feasible through tunable metamaterial structures leading to software defined duplex filters.
