Variable Track Space Channel Routing

The ultimate goal of most channel routers is to route a channel in minimal area. If we use a uniform track spacing in a channel, minimizing the number of tracks is equivalent to minimizing the area. Different routing combinations on adjecent tracks (for instance, with or without vertically adjacent contacts) require different spacing between tracks in order to allow sufficient clearances.
