The journey towards Zero Emissions

You could make an argument that there’s nothing more important than those first two words – after all, we’re all people and our loved ones are the most important to us, while the planet is our home. Have a look at our recent Sustainability Report website under the heading ‘Our Responsibilities’, and you’ll notice that one of our core commitments is improving peoples’ lives through technology. A contributing issue here is curbing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2).

But why are CO2 emissions important? And how does this link to the third word above - Profit?

Rising traffic in mobile networks contributes directly to CO2 emissions, which are increasing by double digit figures every year.

Growing mobile broadband traffic requires more radio access equipment. But if we consider a typical example of adding LTE to existing GSM/WCDMA base station sites, the side effect is a 20% increase in energy consumption. And that means more CO2 emissions as well as rising energy bills for operators.

But there’s an easy way to be environmentally responsible, while satisfying both the increasing regulations limiting CO2 emissions as well as traffic needs. Modernization is not a dirty word.

In February 2015, Nokia Networks launched Zero Emission base station sites. By modernizing old GSM and WCDMA equipment while adding LTE to our Single RAN Advanced products, operators can significantly reduce energy consumption and decouple CO2 emissions from traffic growth – so that rising traffic no longer means rising emissions.

Here’s what you can save:

* Up to a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions and energy consumption

* Up to a 30% reduction in the total cost of ownership for a base station site

This huge reduction in site energy consumption also means that renewable energy sources like solar and wind power can become commercially viable options for base stations sites.

Nokia uses 100% green energy in production wherever available and we encourage our customers and logistics partners to do the same. That translates to over 50% of the electricity we use globally coming from green sources.
