How Global Fiber Peru connected remote villages in the Amazon with high-speed fiber internet
Why Amazon communities lacked viable internet connectivity
The Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest, renowned for its immense biodiversity and ecological significance, is home to remote communities that have long yearned for stable internet connectivity. Difficult terrain, logistical complexities and high costs had historically hampered infrastructure development, leaving many on the other side of the digital divide and in the process hindering economic development.
What solutions were used to connect Amazon villages to fiber broadband?
Despite these formidable challenges, a groundbreaking initiative by Global Fiber Peru is now bringing high-speed broadband to previously unconnected communities. Buried in the Amazon River, a new extensive subaquatic optical, IP and fiber broadband network connects 500,000 users across 400 communities in an area known as the three-border region, where the boundaries of Peru, Colombia and Brazil meet.
FTTH and Multigigabit services
The network connects Iquitos and Santa Rosa de Yaraví in Peru, Leticia in Colombia, and Tabatinga in Brazil, enabling Global Fiber Peru to offer the first FTTH broadband access service and multi-gigabit services for enterprises.
Partnering with FYCO to deploy Nokia technology
The future-proof network was deployed with the help of FYCO, a partner specializing in fiber telecom networks in Latin America. While Nokia deployed a comprehensive solution, including its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), service routers, interconnect routers, access systems, network service platform (NSP), optical line terminals (OLT), optical network terminals (ONTs), and Beacon 1 devices for premium Wi-Fi.
Ongoing support, training and services
Nokia and FYCO are also offering training, professional services, and maintenance services. The agreement involves upgrading the customer's current fiber networks in Lima, Cusco, and Huancayo.
How has high-speed internet connectivity benefited Amazon villages?
Empowering residents and industries with broadband access
Enhanced connectivity will not only usher in prosperity but create numerous opportunities for the local population. Artisans and entrepreneurs will be able to market their products to a global audience while access to online banking and e-commerce platforms will empower residents to engage in financial activities, fostering economic inclusion.
Apart from boosting digital economy, the new fiber network will benefit the region’s long-established sectors like oil production, agriculture (rice, corn, cassava), timber extraction, fishing, tourism, and border trade.
A landmark project
Nokia joining hands with Global Fiber Peru in deploying a fiber network in the Amazon is a landmark project that underscores the importance of connectivity in today's world. By addressing the challenges with innovative solutions and prioritizing community engagement and environmental sustainability, it underscores the importance of inclusive development that respects and preserves nature.
The arrival of high-speed broadband in the Amazon marks the beginning of a transformative journey. As connectivity spreads, the region is expected to witness rapid development and likely inspire similar initiatives in other countries and remote regions, furthering the goal of global digital inclusion.
