Today’s challenge

A DeWi network is a new type of wireless network where the ownership and operation of networking infrastructure (such as WiFi hotspots) is distributed among a large number of participants. The emergence of decentralized wireless (DeWi) networks in recent years has shown enormous potential to disrupt the traditional wireless connectivity market and create new opportunities for both operators and users. 

DeWi networks offer many benefits, such as lowering the barrier to entry for new operators, making wireless networks accessible to more users and reducing coverage gaps. However, DeWi networks also pose several challenges, including a general lack of mutual trust between users and DeWi operators. The sheer number of new operators will also make traditional mutual roaming agreements (e.g., for data offloading) difficult.

Our solution

Nokia Bell Labs is developing a software solution designed to provide seamless and trustworthy connectivity in DeWi networks. Our solution follows a decentralized and access-agnostic approach that scales to support a large number of devices in public and private DeWi networks. We provide the ability to establish trusted ad hoc connections with DeWi network operators. Our solution enables users to choose between different wireless connectivity options in real time. Choices can be made based on personal preferences and momentary needs as opposed to being bound by long-term subscriptions or slowed down by complicated signups. 

Our Trusted Connectivity for Decentralized Wireless Networks solution lays the foundation for a future where wireless connectivity is provided not just by large MNOs, but also by a growing number of independent, small-scale DeWi operators. By leveraging cryptographic principles and blockchain technologies, our solution creates a transparent and secure system that protects against fraudulent activity, ensuring trustworthy connectivity in DeWi networks.

  • Built-in protection against malicious behavior by untrusted hotspot operators (e.g., not honoring the agreed upon connection terms)
