AT&T Fiber Optic Communication Technology and Application

In January 1976, AT&T Bell Laboratories conducted a fiber system experiment in Atlanta to evaluate lightwave technology in an environment approximating field conditions and to provide a system focus for exploratory technology development efforts. Significant commercial application began five years later, with rapid build-up over the next five years.
