Integrated Optics and Optoelectronics

The role of light, actually infrared radiation, in the fields of information processing, storage and movement continues to increase to fill the expanding needs of an information intensive society. The tremendous bandwidth capability offered at optical carrier frequencies, together with the ultra lowloss and low dispersion of single-mode glass fiber, make communication by photons the clear winner for high bit rate, long-distance point-to-point aplications. Presently, thousands of miles of single-mode fiber are being laid across the country and under the Atlantic Ocean.
