Interaction of Molecular Hydrogen with Strained Silicon Bonds

New Image

We have studied the adsorption of molecular hydrogen on Si (111) and Si(100) surfaces at elevated temperatures using UHV TEM. We find stable hydrogenated surface structures with a strong temperature dependence. These structures are quantifiable because the diffraction of 100 keV electrons from monolayers is simply interpretable with kinematical scattering theory, as demonstrated by Takayanagi et al. sup [1] for the clean 7 X 7 surface.
