The study of interfaces represents one of the most challenging areas in materials science. The goal in semiconductor science is to measure interfacial structure and composition at the atomic level and correlate this information with electronic properties. We now have probes such as heavy-ion Rutherford Backscattering and channeling and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy which are capable of resolving structure and composition.
