Increased service provider competition and demand for high-speed Internet access using new technologies such as xDigital Subscriber Loop (xDSL) require a fresh look at how to utilize the installed base of twisted copper pairs in the loop transmission plant. xDSL has become a subject of intense interest around the globe with the ITU-T developing recommendations for both ADSL and HDSL. This article focuses on ANSI Committee T1 and FCC spectrum compatibility activities pertinent to the United States.
