Interoffice Transmission Systems

Between 1980 and the end of 1985, several million kilometers of optical fiber had been installed in the United States, effectively doubling the transmission capability of the telecommunication networks. Point-to-point optical links are being used in ever increasing applications ranging from equipment interconnection between computers, digital switches to high capacity interoffice and intercity backbone transmission systems. In many metropolitan areas, fibers are being used to provide interconnection services between various local area networks scattered in geographically separated areas. Use of fibers in local loops and its far reaching impact in the information age is generally considered as the most challenging problem in telecommunication for the balance of this century.
