The characterization of the sorts of contributions various intonational features make to utterance interpretation is a long-term goal of studies of intonational meanting. In this paper we show how one intonational contour -- L* +H L H% (Pierrehumbert 1980) -- conveys information about beliefs speakers hold regarding the appropriateness of certain items evoked in the discourse.
