Introduction to metastability: Configuration coordinate diagrams.

This paper summarizes the invited moderators introduction to the session on Metastable Defects at the 1986 International Conference on Defects in Semiconductors. A brief summary of the electronic and large lattice relaxation mechanisms for metastability is followed by a general guide to the content of the configuration coordinate diagrams which have proven useful for describing the large lattice relaxation mechanism in general.
