In cellular networks, coverage and capacity can be substantially improved by using the right combination of antenna tilt and height. This paper investigates the effect of the antenna height on the spectral efficiency of large cellular networks when the vertical tilt angle is optimized. Our simulation results show that, under realistic LTE system assumptions, the factors antenna height and vertical tilt do not interact. This indicates that both factors can be independently optimized, which is a significant practical benefit for operating large LTE networks.
