The Fe-S proteins constitute a class of redox active molecules found in all living materials. In this present study, we show that the Fe-S cluster in oxidized succinate-coenzyme Q-reductase, a component of the mitochondrial electron chain, contains a 3-Fe cluster. These studies suggest that, analagous to other 3-Fe proteins during enzyme turnover a 4-Fe cluster is reconstituted in the protein.
