The customer access available in today's Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) provides the means to integrate circuit switching and packet switching into the public switched network (PSN) via several arrangements. These include metallic loops (2B+D, PCM facilities (23B+D, 30B+D), universal digital loop carrier (2B+D), and remote switching units(2B+D, 23B+D, 30B+D). In the future, demands for service will be made instantaneous by providing both new digital loop carrier arrangements and new remote switching arrangements integrated into a local digital switch. These can be combined with Digital Cross Connect Systems, Digital Multiplexers, and fiber optic systems to form a distributed network with a unified operating environment for the provision of all customer services from the narrowband to the broadband. The paper will illustrate these new access arrangements for both narrowband and broadband facilities using the 5ESS(R) Switch in combination with SLC(R) Carrier products and DACS products.
