Micro-Cell Planning within Macro-Cells in UMTS: Downlink Analysis

This paper addresses the issue of micro-cells planning within macro-cell using a single UMTS carrier. Analyses have been made on coverage and capacity issues for 64Kbps circuit switched service through system level simulations. In this paper we attempt to cover some basic issues related to micro-cell planning and design considerations by highlighting the importance of base station outage and soft-handoff ratio through system level simulation. We have presented simulation results on micro-cell downlink capacity and coverage and in particular the role of pilot power settings for micro-cell sites.
