Multi-gigabit per Second Transmission Using Optical Time Division Multiplexing and Demultiplexing

We report 8-Gb/s transmission over 8-km of single-mode fiber using a 2-channel optical time division multiplexed system. The experimental system incorporates mode-locked lasers as sources and Ti:LiNbO sub 3 switches for data encoding and for demultiplexing. We also report multiplexing/demultiplexing with low crosstalk and error rates 10 sup -10 in a 4-channel, 16-Gb/s experimental system.
