Until recently, communications and computers were viewed as separate disciplines. Communications was analog and real time; computing was digital and off-line. Today, these lines are blurred by technologies such as speech processing, electronic mail and FAX. In the next few years, computers and communications will become almost indistinguishable in the race to support a broad range of new multimedia applications made possible by emerging digital processing technologies.
