Collaborations at a distance have become more viable recently with the deployment of integrated networks such as ISDN, the availability of affordable video codec chips and wider internetworking of LAN's. There are many different directions being pursued by researchers and companies based on their previous strengths, such as extensions to Electronic Mail, Videoconferencing, Remote Screens, Fax, etc.
