This paper summarizes the evolution of speech coding technology at 9.6 Kb/s and below. Digital signal processor technology and algorithm development have been recently nourished by slowly emerging communications applications. Current trends in processor technology invite algorithm developers to introduce increasingly complex algorithms with enhanced performance. Performance at these bit-rates suits a variety of applications where voice quality compromise is a function of the need for having the special narrowband coding advantages.
