Network Management For The National Airspace System
30 October 1989
The Federal Aviation Administration requires crucial emphasis be placed on network reliability and availability for communication systems which serve the National Airspace System. Faults in the voice and data networks which support the NAS must not compromise the safety of the nation's airways. As to the job of managing NAS communications resources, several factors are making that job dramatically more difficult than it was just a few years ago: Competition in the communications industry is fragmenting leased communication services over many contractors. The new NAS communications systems that are coming online are much more complex than the systems they are replacing. NAS availability requirements can only be met by high levels of redundancy. Duplicated and sometimes triplicated systems are required. The network is becoming ever more complex, and so is the job of managing it.
