The accompanying article was solicited for a historical issue of the "IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices" in celebration of the Centenary of the IEEE, to appear in November, 1984. It describes the development of multilayer epitaxy and the observations of new electronic and optical phenomena in the multilayer epitaxial structures.
