New network node concepts in optical networks

Flexible optical networks comprising programmable flexible nodes as well as software controlled multi-format transponders are the basis for future agile communication networks. WDM transmission on a flexible WDM grid together with adaptive multi-format transponders enable realization of software controlled elastic optical networks, which are characterized by reliable high capacity transport and efficient utilization of network resources.
