Normalized Generalized Mutual Information as a Forward Error Correction Threshold for Probabilistically Shaped QAM

We present a formula for the normalized generalized mutual information (NGMI) in probabilistically shaped QAM, and show that the NGMI is an excellent FEC threshold that is nearly independent from the underlying QAM constellations regardless of probabilistic shaping.
