If Fiber Optic Modems are to become competitive in the low- cost, high volume RS-232 data transmission market, they must offer increased functionality at a comparable price with limited distance modems which use a "metallic" transmission medium. A cost effective full-duplex Fiber Optic Modem, the ODL(TM) RS-232-2, which transmits and receives optical signals over a single fiber has been developed and is presently in volume production. This device is fully compatible with EIA RS-232C and CCITT V.24 standards. The entire functionality of the ODL RS-232-2 is available in a 16 pin DIP package -- the ODL 02X -- for board level applications. This product operates with a single +5 volt supply and it has TTL compatible inputs and outputs. All of the electronic control functions as well as the optical transceiver are integrated into a single 1.50micron CMOS Silicon Integrated Circuit.
