Optical Amplifiers for Photonic Circuits

While fiber amplifiers have important advantages over semiconductor amplifiers for discrete applications, the potential to integrate the latter with other active and passive components to build complete integrated subsystems for distribution and switching systems remains an alluring prospect. We review the progress on photonic circuits based on optical amplifiers with particular emphasis on integration with bandpass filters essential for noise filtering.
