We challenge the current thinking about "Optical Internetworking" by outlining a path to Optical Data Networking that includes multiple data networking protocols and an optical networking infrastructure free of dependencies on SONET/SDH. Included is a discussion of the predominant data networking protocols for Optical Data Networking and the new technologies that enable a movement toward true "Optical Networking."
