This book is a sequel to OPTICAL FIBER TELECOMMUNICATIONS, 1979, edited by S.E. Miller and A.G. Chynoweth. It is aimed at an audience of optical telecommunications engineers, researchers and graduate students. It is designed to bring the previous volume up-to-date. Together, the two volumes will provide a compact and comprehensive picture of optical fiber technology. Although the objective of the book is to cover the worldwide progress in optical telecommunications, the editors hope the presentation will highlight the AT&T contributions to this important field.
