Optical fiber transmission with self-homodyne DPSK modulation is demonstrated at 1 and 2 Gb/sec data rates. Light from a 1.53micron extended-cavity laser was modulated by a LiNb0 sub 3 waveguide phase modulator and demodulated at the receiver with an interferometer acting as an optical phase discriminator. Receiver sensitivities for 10 sup (-9) BER were -34.4 dBm at 1 Gb/sec and -32.4 dBm at 2 Gb/sec. No dispersion penalty was observed at either bit rate after transmission through 86 km of fiber with 17 psec/nm/km dispersion.
