Optical Single Side Band OFDM Using Dual-Electroabsorption Modulated Laser for Long-Reach PON up to 31.7 Gb/s

We reported on system simulations showing a possibility for enhanced transmission distances by using a novel dual modulation technique producing a large bandwidth optical single side band OFDM modulation. The technique relies on FM/AM applied on an integrated dual RF access electro-absorption modulated laser and on an electrical filtering providing large bandwidth phase-amplitude relation close to required SSB condition. Simulations demonstrate PON configuration with 60km transmission for a useful bit rate of 25 Gb/s while keeping 25dB power budget.
