Optical Switching in Transport Networks: Applications, Requirements, Architectures, Technologies, and Solutions

In this chapter we focus on the emerging core optical transport layer in the communication hierarchy, on optical layer cross-connects and the role they are beginning to serve in managing bandwidth in the converging global voice and data communication transport networks, and on the optical switching technologies considered for the engines of these critical network elements.
