We report the optimization of Ti:LiNbO(3) optical waveguides and directional coupler switches for the 1.56micron wavelength. Total fiber coupled insertion loss as low as 2.2dB was achieved with diffusion conditions allowing low switching voltage in Ti:LiNbO(3) directional coupler switches. The use of these switches as an external modulator in a transmission experiment enabled the achievement of a new single channel bit-rate x distance product. As reported elsewhere, 4Gb/s were transmitted over 117km of optical fiber without a repeater.
