We study the performance of a passive optical residential access network using a TDMA reservation system. A collection of algorithms which allow users to acquire bandwidth on-demand are proposed to support data applications using the Internet protocol. Algorithm behavior is examined under various applied traffic loads, with both bursty and nonbursty traffic. The new dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms provide high efficiency and low queuing delay in the presence of long reservation delays. Both simulation and IP packet traces from operating LANs are used to examine the performance of the proposed bandwidth allocation schemes
