Initially outlines the switching characteristics of Pentaconta system. Each country will have at least one international centre, equipped with signal adapters to interwork with all known signalling systems: particular attention is given to the coaxial cable system for 2700 circuits, the microwave radio RL4H in slimrack construction, and the security of intelocking systems for railroad track switching. A description is given of the operational sequence when a call is originated by a subscriber connected directly to the international exchange, or when a national or international incoming call is made. The main centre, secondary centre and satellite exchanges are outlined, and the subsidiary circuit components are described: line circuits; connecting circuits; registers; classification circuit; trunk circuits; and metering for tariff. Finally the operator positions, the equipment frames, equipment layout for a secondary centre, and terminal satellite exchanges are considered. The equipment required for secondary centres is indicated in tabular form.
