Performance Evaluation of Dynamic Data Rate Adaptation on the UMTS Dedicated Channel

The paper will be divided into two major parts: In the first part we will show the impact of the rate adaptation functionality onto the system performance in terms of lower outage probability due to dropping and blocking, increased cell amd user throughput and decreased packet transmission delay. For these investigations we use the dynamic system simulation tool STEAM, which has been developed to study the dynamics of RRM algorithms in UMTS networks and their performance [1]. The second part of the paper will deal with the impact of rate changes within UTRAN onto the performance of applications, which uses the the TCP/IP protocol suite.
