Detailed experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the performance of forward error correction (FEC) coding in the presence of strong in-band crosstalk. At OC-192 data rate, using 33% RZ modulation format, it was found that FEC can correct for in-band crosstalk levels as high as 20dB in the presence of a signal with 20dB OSNR. There is evidence that the noise statistics associated with in-band crosstalk causes the relationship between uncorrected and corrected bit error rates to depart for the normal.
